Kiln Reaction Thermodynamics & Stoichiometry
Primary Decomposition Reaction
CaF2 (s) + H2SO4 (l) → 2 HF (g) + CaSO4 (s)

ΔH298∘=+58.6 kJ/mol (endothermic). Finely ground acid-grade fluorite concentrate (>97% CaF2, <1.0% SiO2) is premixed with 98% sulfuric acid in a kneader or co-current mixer before feeding into the externally fired rotary kiln at 200°C to 250°C.

Silica Impurity Parasitic Consumption
SiO2 + 4 HF → SiF4 (g) + 2 H2O
SiF4 + 2 HF → H2SiF6 (fluosilicic acid)

Silica (SiO2) is the most damaging impurity in fluorspar. Every 1.0% SiO2 in the feed consumes approximately 2.7% CaF2 and generates volatile SiF4, severely diminishing net HF recovery and contaminating distillation reboilers.

Strategic High-Tech Pillars & End Markets
Semiconductor Wet Etching & RCA Clean
Ultra-Pure Electronic Grade HF (UP-SS / PPT grade, 49% conc.) and Buffered Oxide Etch (BOE, NH4F+HF) selectively etch native SiO2 (SiO2+6HF→H2SiF6+2H2O) without attacking underlying crystalline silicon.
Lithium-Ion Battery Electrolyte & PVDF
AHF is reacted with PCl5 and LiF to synthesize LiPF6 conducting salt. Additionally, fluorinated monomer VDF polymerizes into PVDF cathode binder and separator coating.
Green Hydrogen Proton Exchange Membranes
Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA, Nafion) membranes for PEM water electrolyzers and fuel cells require tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) derived from chlorodifluoromethane (R22/AHF).
Synthetic Anhydrite Byproduct Circularity
Over 1.74 tons of synthetic anhydrite (CaSO4) generated per ton of reacted CaF2 are neutralised with lime and sold to cement kilns and floor screeds, achieving 100% solid waste circularity.
Fluorspar Refining & Fluorochemistry Assessment

Validate your engineering and project finance mastery across 4 industry-calibrated questions.

1. What is the stoichiometric chemical reaction inside an industrial hydrofluoric acid rotary kiln?
2. Why must acid-grade fluorspar (acidspar) maintain silica (SiO2) contamination strictly below 1.0%?
3. Why are Electronic Grade HF (UP-SS) and LiPF6 considered strategic bottlenecks for high-tech manufacturing?
4. How is the solid kiln discharge (synthetic anhydrite, CaSO4) monetized in modern sustainable plants?

Frequently Asked Questions

Acid-grade fluorspar (acidspar, containing at least 97% calcium fluoride with less than 1.0% silica) is the single global primary precursor for hydrogen fluoride (HF) and hydrofluoric acid. There is no commercial substitute for acidspar in HF manufacturing. HF is the chemical cornerstone for semiconductor wafer etching (electronic grade HF), lithium-ion battery electrolytes (lithium hexafluorophosphate, LiPF6), cathode binders (polyvinylidene fluoride, PVDF), proton-exchange membranes for green hydrogen (Nafion/PFSA), uranium fuel enrichment (UF6), and low-GWP refrigerants. Because global fluorspar mining and refining are heavily concentrated in a handful of jurisdictions, both the United States and European Union classify fluorspar as a high-supply-risk critical raw material.

Inside the externally fired rotary kiln at 200°C to 250°C, finely ground acidspar reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid (98% H2SO4) according to the endothermic reaction: CaF2 + H2SO4 -> 2 HF (gas) + CaSO4 (synthetic anhydrite). Silica (SiO2) contamination is severely penalized because silica reacts avidly with generated HF: SiO2 + 4 HF -> SiF4 (gas) + 2 H2O. Each unit of silica not only consumes valuable hydrofluoric acid but also generates silicon tetrafluoride gas, which reacts with moisture to form corrosive fluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6). This causes severe acid yield loss, fouls gas scrubbers, and increases distillation purification costs.

Crude AHF gas emerging from the rotary kiln is scrubbed of entrained sulfuric acid and dust, condensed into liquid, and passed through fractional distillation columns to strip light ends (SiF4, SO2) and heavy ends (H2SO4, H2O). For semiconductor-grade HF (Parts-Per-Trillion / UP-SS grade), the distilled AHF is dissolved in ultra-pure deionized water under cleanroom class 1/10 conditions, followed by sub-boiling non-metallic distillation, specialized ion-exchange resin columns, and sub-micron PTFE membrane filtration. This reduces metallic cation impurities (Fe, Cu, Ni, Na) below 10 parts-per-trillion, essential for sub-5nm logic gate etching and Buffered Oxide Etch (BOE) formulations.

Hydrofluoric acid provides the fluorine backbone for two critical lithium-ion battery components: the conductive electrolyte salt and the cathode binder. First, AHF reacts with phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5) and lithium fluoride (LiF) to synthesize lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), which represents over 85% of global commercial battery electrolyte salts. Second, AHF is used to produce vinylidene fluoride (VDF), which polymerizes into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). PVDF is the indispensable binder that adheres high-nickel cathode active materials (NMC/LFP) to aluminum current collector foils and coats battery separator films for thermal stability.

For every metric ton of pure CaF2 reacted, the rotary kiln generates approximately 1.74 metric tons of calcium sulfate (CaSO4, synthetic anhydrite). Rather than incurring hazardous waste landfill disposal fees, modern plants neutralize residual acidity with lime and sell the dry synthetic anhydrite to the construction industry for $20 to $35 per metric ton. It is highly valued as a retarder in Portland cement manufacturing and as a binder for high-performance self-leveling floor screeds, replacing quarried natural gypsum and reducing Scope 3 mineral extraction footprints.
