First-Principles Heavy Liquid Metal Thermohydraulics & Fast Neutrons
1. Heavy Liquid Metal Coolant Properties & Boiling Immunity
Lead-Cooled Fast Reactors utilize molten elemental lead (\(\text{Pb}\)) or lead-bismuth eutectic (\(\text{LBE}\)) as primary heat transport media. Liquid lead exhibits a remarkably wide liquid range spanning over \(1,420^\circ\text{C}\):
Because pure lead will not vaporize until reaching \(1,749^\circ\text{C}\), the entire reactor pool operates at ambient atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa). This eliminates the catastrophic explosive depressurization hazards of pressurized water reactors (PWRs at 15.5 MPa), completely precluding coolant loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCA).
2. Fast Spectrum Transuranic Waste Destruction
Because lead has a very low neutron capture cross-section and does not slow neutrons down significantly (unlike hydrogen in water), neutrons retain high kinetic energies (\(E_n > 0.1\text{ MeV}\)). Under this fast spectrum:
This unique neutron economy allows LFRs to consume legacy spent nuclear fuel, burning multi-millennium high-level radioactive actinides into short-lived fission products, closing the nuclear fuel cycle and shrinking waste management timelines from 300,000 years to approximately 300 years.
3. Passive Natural Circulation & Corrosion Passivation
The high density difference between hot core riser lead (\(520^\circ\text{C}\)) and downcomer lead (\(400^\circ\text{C}\)) creates an immense natural circulation driving head. Even in a station blackout with zero pumps, the reactor passively transfers decay heat to air-cooled RVACS loops indefinitely. Advanced Alumina-Forming Austenitic (AFA) steels form a self-healing \(\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3\) nanolayer under active dissolved oxygen control (\(10^{-6}\text{ wt}\%\)), eliminating structural corrosion.
