Lean Manufacturing Guide
Understanding Takt time & line balancing
Takt is the German word for baton or heartbeat pace in music. In Lean production, Takt sets the exact rhythm of manufacturing.
- Demand Alignment: Producing faster than Takt creates overproduction inventory waste; producing slower creates backorders and missed customer deadlines.
- The Bottleneck Trap: The entire production line can only move as fast as its slowest workstation ($max(t_i)$).
- Line Balancing: Reallocating task elements between stations levels workload and slashes balance delay idle waste.
