Engineering Guide: Carnot Battery & PTES Principles
1. The Carnot Battery Concept & Thermodynamic Decoupling
A Carnot Battery (officially codified by the International Energy Agency under IEA Annex 36) is an energy storage system that stores electricity as thermal exergy. During charging, low-cost or surplus renewable electricity powers an industrial heat pump that elevates thermal energy into an insulated hot reservoir (e.g. molten solar salt at 565°C or packed basalt gravel at 650°C), while rejecting or chilling a cold reservoir (-30°C to 20°C). During discharge, the stored thermal gradient drives a heat engine (closed Brayton turbine, Rankine steam turbine, or transcritical CO2 cycle) to generate dispatchable AC electricity.
Unlike electrochemical batteries where power (MW) and capacity (MWh) are tightly coupled inside each cell, Carnot batteries completely decouple power and energy. The power rating is governed by turbomachinery, while storage duration is scaled simply by expanding insulated steel tanks filled with cheap, earth-abundant materials ($15–$30/kWh_th). This makes PTES extraordinarily competitive for long-duration storage (10 to 24+ hours).
2. Coal-to-Carnot Repurposing & Capital Efficiency
Thousands of gigawatts of legacy coal and fossil thermal power stations are being decommissioned globally. A major commercial advantage of Carnot batteries is the ability to perform a Coal-to-Carnot retrofit. By replacing only the polluting coal-fired boiler with a high-temperature heat pump and molten salt storage island, project developers can reuse up to 60% of the existing facility assets:
- Turbine & Synchronous Generator: Avoids purchasing a new power island.
- Grid Interconnection Switchyard: Retains valuable transmission interconnection rights and transformers without waiting years in utility interconnection queues.
- Cooling Towers & Water Permits: Reuses existing condenser heat sinks and water rights.
- Energy Community Bonuses: Qualifies for up to 40% Investment Tax Credits (ITC) under the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA Section 48).
