A concise table is often better when exact values matter or there are only two results. A chart earns its space when it reveals a comparison, trend, distribution, or relationship faster than the table.

Build the chart with the CLEAR process

  1. Claim: write the narrow question the chart must help answer. Do not title it with a conclusion you have not tested.
  2. Level of comparison: identify the baseline, changed run, repeated trials, categories, or time periods that belong together.
  3. Encode honestly: map position or length to values; use equal intervals, readable labels, consistent precision, and a zero baseline for bars.
  4. Add context: name the simulator, scenario, metric definition, unit, time span, sample size, and any target or guardrail.
  5. Review the inference: state what the chart shows, what it does not show, a plausible alternative explanation, and the next test.
Accessibility check: use direct labels, patterns or symbols as well as color, sufficient contrast, readable text, and a short written summary. Never make color the only way to distinguish a result.

Visualize a lemonade staffing decision

A team tests whether adding a helper during the same ten-day lemonade scenario improves the business. All other planned decisions remain matched. The baseline earns $84 profit, serves 164 cups, wastes 22 cups, and has a longest wait of 8 minutes. The helper run earns $91 profit, serves 190 cups, wastes 31 cups, and has a longest wait of 4 minutes.

A clear presentation

  • Use one two-bar chart for profit, starting at $0.
  • Place cups served, waste, and wait in three aligned mini charts or a table because their units differ.
  • Title the display “Helper run improved profit and wait time in one matched scenario.”
  • Label the waste increase as a tradeoff rather than hiding it.

A bounded interpretation

The helper run produced $7 more profit and cut the longest simulated wait by four minutes, while waste rose by nine cups. The result supports repeating the matched test and monitoring contribution after labor and waste. It does not prove that hiring always increases real profit.

Catch misleading charts

  • Bars begin above zero without a clear reason.
  • Tick marks or time intervals are unequal.
  • Area or three-dimensional volume exaggerates magnitude.
  • Different units share one unlabeled scale.
  • A favorable period or run is selected after seeing results.
  • Missing, failed, or contrary runs disappear.
  • The chart title claims cause from an uncontrolled comparison.
  • Decorative color is stronger than the evidence hierarchy.

Write the chart note

Every finished chart should be accompanied by four short statements:

  1. Observation: the exact visible difference.
  2. Interpretation: the business mechanism that may explain it.
  3. Limitation: the missing control, measure, or real-world condition.
  4. Decision: the next test, metric, guardrail, and stop rule.

Use fictional simulation data or anonymous run codes. Do not put student names, personal information, confidential business records, or identifiable rankings into charts. Do not manipulate scales, omit inconvenient results, or imply guaranteed real-world performance. Legal, safety, privacy, labor, accessibility, environmental, licensing, and consumer duties remain constraints even when they reduce a simulated financial result.
