Quartz Crystal Chemistry, Decrepitation & CZ Crucible Mastery Quiz

1. 573°C α→β Inversion Quench Decrepitation & HF/HCl Rim Etching
Heating $100\text{–}300\ \mu\text{m}$ quartz grains across the $573^\circ\text{C}$ trigonal-to-hexagonal ($\alpha \rightarrow \beta$) phase transition up to $1,000^\circ\text{C}$ followed by rapid quenching in $18.2\ \text{M}\Omega\cdot\text{cm}$ water ruptures internal $\text{H}_2\text{O-NaCl-CO}_2$ fluid inclusions. Pressurized mixed-acid leaching then dissolves the impurity-enriched outer silica rim:
Simultaneously, $\text{HCl}$ and $\text{HNO}_3$ complex exposed $\text{Fe}^{3+}$, $\text{Ti}^{4+}$, $\text{Al}^{3+}$, and alkaline-earth inclusions along newly opened micro-fissures, reducing total trace elements below $20\text{ ppm}$ ($4\text{N8}$).
2. 1,150°C Cl₂/HCl Alkali Volatilization & 1,450°C CZ Melt Reaction
Interstitial alkali cations ($\text{Li}^+, \text{Na}^+, \text{K}^+$) charge-compensating $\text{Al}^{3+}$ substitutions inside $c$-axis structural channels are extracted via $1,150^\circ\text{C}$ chlorination roasting ($<0.2\text{ ppm}$ alkalis for $5\text{N}$ HPQ). Inside the $1,450^\circ\text{C}$ Czochralski puller, molten silicon slowly dissolves the inner $5\text{N}$ crucible wall:
Any micro-bubbles or trace $\text{Na/K/Fe/B/P}$ in that dissolving inner layer enter the silicon melt directly, triggering uneven $\beta\text{-cristobalite}$ spalling and loss of zero-dislocation single-crystal growth.
