Governing Black-Ash Carbothermic, Carbonation & Aluminothermic Equations

1. Black-Ash Rotary Kiln Reduction

Insoluble celestite (SrSO4) and barite (BaSO4) are reduced with metallurgical coke at 1,150–1,200°C to water-soluble sulfides:

SrSO4 + 2C → SrS + 2CO2↑

Endothermic reaction (ΔH°298 = +178 kJ/mol SrSO4, +191 kJ/mol BaSO4); stoichiometric carbon is 0.131 t C/t SrSO4.

2. Aqueous Carbonation & NaHS Capture

Hot-leached SrS and BaS liquors react with CO2 gas to precipitate pure carbonates while evolving H2S for caustic scrubbing:

SrS(aq) + CO2 + H2O → SrCO3↓ + H2S↑

Scrubbing H2S in NaOH yields NaHS (56.06 g/mol), a high-margin Cu-Mo flotation depressant.

3. Vacuum Aluminothermic Sr Distillation

Calcined SrO is reduced with aluminum powder at 1,150°C and 10−3 mbar to distill metallic strontium (Tb = 1,377°C):

3SrO + 2Al → 3Sr↑ + Al2O3

Alloyed into Al-10%Sr master alloy, 200 ppm Sr modifies brittle acicular silicon in EV structural aluminum gigacastings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Both celestite (SrSO4, Ksp = 3.44 × 10−7) and barite (BaSO4, Ksp = 1.08 × 10−10) are insoluble in water and mineral acids. Roasting the concentrates with metallurgical coke at 1,150–1,200°C in a rotary kiln reduces the insoluble sulfates into water-soluble strontium sulfide (SrS) and barium sulfide (BaS) black ash (MSO4 + 2C → MS + 2CO2), allowing hot-water counter-current leaching to separate pure Sr2+ and Ba2+ ions from silica and iron gangue.

Bubbling CO2 gas through hot aqueous SrS or BaS solution precipitates insoluble SrCO3 or BaCO3 while liberating concentrated hydrogen sulfide gas (MS + CO2 + H2O → MCO3 + H2S). Instead of flaring H2S, modern refineries scrub the gas with caustic soda (H2S + NaOH → NaHS + H2O) to produce commercial sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), the primary sulfidizing and Cu-Fe depression reagent used in porphyry copper-molybdenum flotation circuits.

Sub-100 nm, ultra-high-purity (99.995%) perovskite Barium Titanate (BaTiO3) doped with Strontium (Ba1−xSrxTiO3) exhibits a colossal relative dielectric permittivity (ϵr = 3,000 to 10,000). It forms the active dielectric layers inside Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs). A single EV requires over 10,000 automotive-grade MLCCs, and an AI GPU server rack requires over 25,000 high-capacitance MLCCs for low-inductance power delivery.

Ceramic-grade SrCO3 is mixed with iron oxide (α-Fe2O3) at a 1:6 molar ratio and calcined at 1,200–1,280°C (SrCO3 + 6Fe2O3 → SrFe12O19 + CO2) to form magnetoplumbite M-type strontium hexaferrite. Accounting for over 85% of global permanent magnet tonnage, SrFe12O19 provides low-cost, corrosion-resistant, rare-earth-free magnetic flux for automotive auxiliary motors (HVAC blowers, window lifts, seat actuators, ABS pumps, and cooling fans).

Calcined strontium oxide (SrO) is briquetted with aluminum powder and heated to 1,150°C under high vacuum (10−3 mbar) in stainless-steel retorts (3SrO + 2Al → 3Sr + Al2O3). Because strontium has a much lower boiling point (1,377°C) than aluminum (2,470°C), pure metallic Sr vapor distills and condenses in a cooled crown. Alloyed into Al-10%Sr master alloy, adding 150–250 ppm Sr modifies brittle acicular silicon into ductile fibrous silicon in structural EV aluminum gigacastings.
