Frequently Asked Questions
A ZEBRA battery (Zero Emission Battery Research Activities) is a high-temperature molten salt battery operating between 245°C and 350°C. It pairs a liquid metallic sodium negative electrode (anode) with a solid porous nickel chloride (NiCl2) positive electrode (cathode). The electrodes are separated by a sodium-ion conducting beta''-alumina ceramic solid electrolyte (BASE) tube. Inside the cathode compartment, a secondary molten salt electrolyte (NaAlCl4) wicks through the porous nickel structure, enabling rapid transport of sodium ions between the solid reaction sites and the ceramic wall according to the primary reaction: 2Na + NiCl2 ⇌ 2NaCl + Ni (nominal cell potential 2.58 V at 270°C).
In conventional lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries, a cell failure typically creates an open-circuit fault or dangerous thermal runaway, de-energizing the entire series string. In contrast, if the ceramic BASE tube in a ZEBRA cell fractures, molten sodium mixes with molten NaAlCl4 and nickel chloride in a localized, benign reaction that forms harmless solid sodium chloride, aluminum, and metallic nickel. This reaction creates a permanent low-resistance short-circuit bridge (<1 mΩ). The remaining healthy cells in the series string continue carrying full load current with only an imperceptible reduction in module voltage, allowing modules to remain in service with up to 5% failed cells before maintenance.
ZEBRA batteries are housed within double-walled stainless steel vacuum insulation panels (Dewar enclosure), limiting thermal heat leakage to 80 to 140 W per 20 kWh module. Because the internal electrochemistry operates at 250°C to 300°C, extreme ambient external temperatures—from -40°C Arctic conditions to +60°C desert environments—have zero adverse effect on cell performance. High ambient heat actually narrows the thermal gradient (ΔT) between the core and the environment, reducing heat loss. The system requires no air conditioning, chiller loops, or climate-controlled shelters, eliminating massive parasitic cooling loads and HVAC maintenance costs.
Standard ZEBRA cathodes incorporate 10% to 20% iron blended with nickel. While nickel reacts at 2.58 V, iron participates in a secondary displacement reaction: 2Na + FeCl2 ⇌ 2NaCl + Fe at 2.35 V. This lower voltage plateau serves as a sacrificial overdischarge buffer, safeguarding the primary nickel matrix against irreversible over-depletion while providing emergency reserve capacity. Furthermore, iron doping refines the pore structure of the cathode composite, substantially reducing internal resistance and boosting pulse power capability during cold start.
ZEBRA batteries excel in mission-critical applications where safety, thermal robustness, and zero maintenance are paramount: off-grid telecom base stations in harsh remote climates, underground mining locomotives where fire is prohibited, maritime hybrid vessel auxiliary power complying with strict SOLAS marine fire codes, and electrical substation black start backup. Over a 15-year lifecycle, ZEBRA delivers 4,500+ deep cycles at 100% depth of discharge with zero calendar aging and zero HVAC replacements, producing a highly competitive levelized cost of storage ($140 to $220/MWh) compared to climate-controlled lithium-ion installations.
