Frequently Asked Questions

An aluminum-air battery is a primary metal-air electrochemical system combining a metallic aluminum negative electrode (anode) with an open porous gas-diffusion positive electrode (air cathode) that draws oxygen from the atmosphere. At the anode, aluminum undergoes a three-electron oxidation: Al + 4OH- → Al(OH)4- + 3e- (E° = -2.31 V vs SHE). At the cathode, atmospheric oxygen is catalytically reduced: O2 + 2H2O + 4e- → 4OH- (E° = +0.40 V vs SHE). The net reaction, 4Al + 3O2 + 6H2O → 4Al(OH)3, produces a theoretical standard potential of 2.71 V and a monumental theoretical specific energy of 8,100 Wh/kg of aluminum (2,980 Ah/kg charge capacity), vastly exceeding commercial lithium-ion intercalation cells.

Because aluminum has a highly negative standard potential, it spontaneously reacts with aqueous electrolytes via parasitic chemical self-corrosion: 2Al + 6H2O → 2Al(OH)3 + 3H2↑. This parasitic reaction consumes aluminum metal without generating external electrical work, producing hydrogen gas and reducing anodic Coulombic efficiency. To suppress self-corrosion, commercial systems use ultra-pure aluminum (99.99%) alloyed with micro-quantities of indium, gallium, tin, and magnesium, which increase the hydrogen overpotential. In addition, chemical corrosion inhibitors such as sodium stannate, zincate, or organic surfactant additives are dissolved in the alkaline potassium hydroxide (KOH) electrolyte, driving Coulombic efficiency above 85% to 95%.

Unlike secondary lithium-ion batteries that require hours of high-power grid electrical recharging, aluminum-air batteries operate as 'metal fuel cells' that are mechanically recharged in 3 to 5 minutes by sliding out spent aluminum plate cassettes and inserting fresh aluminum anode cartridges. The discharged reaction byproduct (hydrargillite / aluminum hydroxide) is flushed into collection tanks and returned to industrial aluminum smelters, where it is remelted into fresh metal using renewable hydroelectric or solar power in a 100% closed-loop metallurgical cycle.

In their unactivated reserve state, aluminum-air batteries are stored dry with metallic aluminum plates separated from air cathodes in an un-wetted state. Without liquid electrolyte present, aluminum exhibits virtually zero chemical degradation and zero self-discharge, allowing dry reserve units to sit on standby for 15+ years in extreme climates without trickle charging or maintenance. When an emergency power outage or grid failure occurs, an integrated automated pump floods the cells with stored water or alkaline solution, delivering full rated electrical output within 30 to 60 seconds.

Aluminum-air technology provides compelling economic advantages in off-grid telecom backup, electric vehicle long-haul range extension (1,000+ km supplementary range), unmanned maritime vessels (AUVs), and disaster resilience microgrids. Compared to remote diesel generators, aluminum fuel cartridges eliminate diesel fuel theft, eliminate toxic exhaust and noisy reciprocating engines, and reduce levelized operating costs ($0.45 to $0.70/kWh vs $1.20 to $2.00/kWh for remote diesel logistics), while delivering practical pack-level gravimetric energy densities of 400 to 1,200 Wh/kg.
