Governing AlN Ceramic Relations
1. Carbothermal Nitridation
Alumina is reduced by carbon and nitrided in flowing nitrogen:
Al2O3 + 3C + N2 → 2AlN + 3CO
Stoichiometry needs about 1.25 t Al2O3 per t AlN.
2. Substrate Count
Finished pieces from powder mass:
N = mAlN / 0.0543 kg × ηyield
190×138×0.635 mm at 3.26 g/cm³ is about 54 g per substrate.
3. Thermal Resistance
One-dimensional conduction through the ceramic:
Rth = t / (k × A)
AlN at 170–200 W/m·K cuts Rth about 7× versus alumina at the same thickness.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
AlN combines thermal conductivity of 170–200 W/m·K, roughly seven to eight times alumina, with excellent electrical insulation and a thermal expansion coefficient near 4.5 ppm/K that matches silicon and silicon carbide. That removes heat from power modules and reduces solder fatigue.
High-purity alumina is mixed with carbon black and heated at 1,500–1,700°C in flowing nitrogen (Al2O3 + 3C + N2 → 2AlN + 3CO). Residual carbon is burned out in air at about 700°C, leaving fine uniform AlN powder with controlled oxygen content.
Yttria reacts with the surface alumina on AlN grains to form liquid yttrium-aluminum-oxide phases at about 1,800°C. These densify the ceramic and pull dissolved oxygen out of the lattice into grain boundaries, which raises thermal conductivity because oxygen scatters phonons.
AMB bonds thick copper foils to AlN or silicon nitride using an Ag-Cu-Ti filler at about 850°C, where titanium reacts with the ceramic surface so the braze wets it. The result survives thousands of thermal cycles, making it the standard for automotive SiC traction inverter modules.
The model converts powder capacity into finished substrate counts using a 54 gram substrate mass and process yield, prices substrates and surplus powder, subtracts raw materials, power, copper and braze costs and fixed O&M, applies a two-year ramp, 1.5% annual price erosion, 10-year depreciation and 21% tax, then discounts 20 years of cash flow at WACC.
