Second Harmonic Generation Efficiency ($\eta$):
$$\eta_{\text{SHG}} = \tanh^2\left(\Gamma L\right) \cdot \text{sinc}^2\left(\frac{\Delta k L}{2}\right)$$
Where coupling coefficient $\Gamma = \sqrt{\frac{8\pi^2 d_{\text{eff}}^2 I_\omega}{n^3 \epsilon_0 c \lambda_1^2}}$ and phase mismatch $\Delta k = k_{2\omega} - 2k_\omega$.
Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion (SPDC):

Non-Linear Optics & Borate Crystal Mastery Quiz
Frequently Asked Questions
Beta-Barium Borate (beta-BaB2O4 or BBO) and Lithium Triborate (LiB3O5 or LBO) are non-centrosymmetric inorganic crystals with exceptionally high second-order optical susceptibility chi^(2). They enable frequency conversion of near-infrared laser light (e.g., 1064 nm from Nd:YAG or Yb:fiber lasers) into green (532 nm via SHG), ultraviolet (355 nm via THG), and deep-UV (266 nm via FHG), powering semiconductor inspection, micromachining, and eye surgery.
In LBO, temperature-tuned Type-I Non-Critical Phase Matching (NCPM) occurs at approximately 149°C for 1064 nm to 532 nm conversion where light propagates along a principal crystallographic dielectric axis (theta = 90°, phi = 0°). This eliminates birefringent spatial walk-off (rho = 0 mrad), preserving perfect spatial overlap between fundamental and harmonic beams over long crystals without beam distortion.
BBO is slightly hygroscopic. When exposed to ambient relative humidity (>40%), water molecules react with surface barium borate ions to form microscopic hydrate precipitates, degrading the optical polish into a scattering haze that drastically reduces the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT). BBO crystals are packaged in hermetically sealed, nitrogen-purged cells with quartz windows or operated in dry heated oven cells above 50°C.
Through Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion (SPDC), a high-energy pump photon spontaneously splits into a pair of lower-energy signal and idler photons inside the non-linear crystal while conserving energy and momentum. BBO is the gold-standard crystal for polarization-entangled photon pair generation, achieving pair emission rates exceeding 10^5 to 10^6 pairs per second per milliwatt of pump power for quantum key distribution (QKD) and photonic quantum computing.
A full-scale NLO crystal fab requires $30M–$35M in initial capex, driven by high-temperature Top-Seeded Solution Growth (TSSG) furnaces, high-purity platinum crucibles, multi-axis X-ray orientation goniometers, precision pitch lap polishers, and Ion Beam Sputtering (IBS) dielectric coating chambers. Operational cost drivers include 5N precursor chemicals, platinum evaporation replacement, high-skilled optical master opticians, and dry-atmosphere cleanrooms.
