What belongs in a business simulation report?
A strong report explains a decision from question to conclusion. It states what the team wanted to learn, predicts an outcome and tradeoff, documents a fair baseline-versus-test comparison, reports results with units, checks the math, interprets more than one business outcome, and recommends a next action that the evidence can actually support.
Separate observation from interpretation. “Profit increased by $420” reports a result. “The price change caused the gain” is an interpretation that requires comparable runs. “Keep the new price while monitoring demand” is a recommendation. This separation makes the report easier to verify and keeps simulated evidence from becoming an exaggerated real-world claim.
Use the Q-M-E-A-L report structure
Q — Question and prediction
Name the fictional business, decision lever, intended outcome, predicted tradeoff, and any safety, care, privacy, labor, accessibility, or legal constraint that cannot be traded away.
M — Method
Identify the baseline, the one input intentionally changed, the settings held constant, run length, and any repeat or boundary test. Disclose uncontrolled differences instead of hiding them.
E — Evidence
Use a table or chart with descriptive labels, values, and units. Include two to four decision-relevant outcomes and at least one transparent calculation such as percentage change, margin, contribution, or break-even volume.
A — Analysis and action
Explain what improved, what weakened, what remained uncertain, and why. Recommend keep, change, reject, or test again, with a monitoring measure or stop rule.
L — Limits and learning
Name one model limitation, one alternative explanation, and one useful next test. State what the simulation cannot prove about real customers, employees, markets, regulations, or financial outcomes.

When runs are not comparable, say so. A confounded comparison can still support a useful report if the student identifies the problem, avoids a causal claim, and proposes a cleaner follow-up test.
Worked example: grocery-store staffing test
Question and prediction. The fictional grocery store tested whether one additional worker could reduce lost sales enough to cover higher labor cost. The prediction was that service and sales would improve, but the added payroll could reduce profit if demand was too low.
Method. The team used the same price, promotion, inventory target, opening hours, and four-week run length in both runs. Staffing increased from two workers in the baseline to three in the test. Because the simulator contains variation, the team repeated the test once before writing the recommendation.
Evidence. Average monthly profit increased from $3,200 to $3,620, a difference of $420. Percentage change = ($420 ÷ $3,200) × 100 = 13.1%. Lost sales fell from 94 to 51 units, and customer satisfaction rose from 72 to 79. Labor cost increased by $1,050.
Analysis and action. The higher staffing level produced a net simulated improvement: the recovered sales and service benefit outweighed payroll in these matched runs. However, the labor increase creates risk if demand weakens. The recommendation is to test the setting during one lower-demand period and keep it only if profit remains positive, lost sales stay lower, and employee workload does not become unsafe.
Limits and learning. The model does not represent every shift pattern, local wage rule, employee skill, or customer behavior. The results do not prove that a real store should hire someone. A real decision would require current demand data, lawful scheduling and employment review, worker input, and a limited monitored trial.

For fair individual assessment, teams may share run evidence while each student writes the analysis, explains one calculation, or answers a conference question. Allow typed, handwritten, oral, recorded, visual, or teacher-scribed responses where appropriate. Keep the evidence and reasoning expectations consistent; operating the device is not evidence of understanding.

- Use fictional or teacher-provided businesses. Do not require personal financial, employment, health, family, or other sensitive information.
- Label all output as simulated. Do not describe model results as guaranteed earnings, professional advice, market research, or facts about real people.
- Treat safety, licensing, privacy, accessibility, truthful advertising, fair labor, environmental duties, and customer or animal care as operating constraints.
- Do not reward deceptive promotion, fabricated reviews, undisclosed claims, unsafe workload, or any strategy designed to generate invalid advertising traffic.
- For real high-impact decisions, use current authoritative sources and qualified legal, financial, employment, health, or safety review as appropriate.
