What should a business simulation rubric assess?
A useful rubric assesses the quality of the student's process: a specific decision question, a comparison that changes one main variable, accurate evidence from both runs, and a recommendation that weighs benefits, costs, and uncertainty. A profitable result can come from chance, an unfair comparison, or a model shortcut, so profit alone is weak evidence of learning.

Set up comparable evidence before scoring
1. Name one decision
Ask a testable question about price, staffing, capacity, inventory, quality, marketing, maintenance, or another adjustable input.
2. Record two runs
Capture a baseline and a changed run with the same units and time period. Keep other important choices steady where possible.
3. Require a tradeoff
Use one success measure and one guardrail measure, such as profit with wait time, sales with waste, or output with quality.

One priority for revision
What each score range means
- 14–16: defensible experiment and nuanced evidence-based recommendation.
- 11–13: sound comparison and reasoning with one area needing more precision.
- 8–10: partial evidence of the process; revise the test record or interpretation.
- 4–7: rebuild the comparison with a clearer decision, baseline, and evidence table.
These bands are guidance, not a mandatory grade conversion. Apply the school or course grading policy.

Adapt the rubric without lowering the thinking
Short activity
Score only test design and evidence for eight points. Require one baseline, one changed run, two measures, and a one-sentence tradeoff.
More support
Preselect the decision and metrics, provide sentence frames, allow oral explanation, or pair the operator with an evidence recorder.
Extension
Require a third run, percentage change, break-even reasoning, sensitivity check, or comparison of the same strategy in two simulations.
Use fair evidence for group and individual grades
For team work, score the shared decision record, controlled comparison, and evidence table once. Then assess each student's individual reflection, oral conference, or exit ticket for interpretation and contribution. Tell students in advance which parts are shared and which are individual.
Do not require names, email addresses, public sharing, or personal business information to use the simulator or rubric. Use only school-approved submission tools. If students use permitted outside assistance, require them to verify every figure against their own runs and follow the class attribution and academic-integrity policy.
Keep simulated success in perspective
Do not reward a recommendation that increases simulated profit by ignoring safety, accessibility, labor standards, licensing, animal welfare, environmental duties, truthful advertising, or customer well-being. These are operating constraints and stakeholder responsibilities, not optional score penalties.
Simulator outputs are simplified educational results, not financial, legal, employment, safety, or investment advice. Strong work identifies missing real-world evidence and proposes a small, responsible validation step rather than claiming a guaranteed outcome.

How should a business simulation be graded?
Grade the decision question, fair comparison, evidence, tradeoff analysis, and reflection. Do not rank students only by simulated profit or net worth.
How many points is this rubric worth?
The full rubric has four criteria worth four points each, for 16 points. A short activity can use two selected rows for eight points.
Can I use it for group work?
Yes. Score shared evidence at the team level, then assess each student's reasoning through an individual reflection, exit ticket, or short conference.
What if the runs are not comparable?
Reward the student for identifying the confounder if the explanation is accurate, then ask for a cleaner follow-up test before accepting a strong causal claim.
Do students need accounts or personal information?
No. The rubric and simulations require no account or personal information. Teachers can collect the work using a school-approved method.
