Set the collaboration rules before students play
- Name one team decision question. The group should know which input it may change, which metrics matter, and which safety or stakeholder limits are non-negotiable.
- Assign roles visibly. Give each student one card below. Explain that roles divide the work; they do not give one person ownership of the decision.
- Require a prediction before every run. The operator waits until the team records the proposed change, expected effect, and reason.
- Rotate after a complete cycle. A cycle includes prediction, run, evidence check, stakeholder review, and a documented next decision.
- Collect individual evidence. Ask each student to explain one result, tradeoff, or next test in their own words before the activity ends.
Core rule: no role may silently change inputs, hide an inconvenient result, speak for another student, or treat the highest simulated profit as automatic proof of the best decision.
Four roles for one decision cycle
Facilitator
Keeps the group on the decision question and makes space for each person to contribute. The facilitator asks for a prediction, checks agreement on the one change, and calls a pause when the team lacks evidence.
Produces: the agreed decision statement and a short record of disagreement or uncertainty.
Simulation operator
Enters only the agreed inputs, confirms the scenario, and reads results without selectively reporting good news. The operator does not optimize alone and should be able to reproduce the run.
Produces: an accurate input record and confirmation of what stayed constant.
Evidence analyst
Records the same metrics for baseline and comparison runs, includes units, calculates a useful difference, and separates observations from explanations. The analyst flags missing or non-comparable evidence.
Produces: the result table and one evidence-bounded claim.
Stakeholder reviewer
Checks effects on customers, workers, suppliers, owners, community, safety, privacy, accessibility, and other relevant interests. The reviewer identifies a tradeoff, guardrail, model limitation, and result that should stop the strategy.
Produces: the stakeholder check and responsible limit.
Run a seven-step team decision cycle
- Frame: facilitator reads the question and confirms the decision boundary.
- Predict: each member silently records an expected effect; the team then compares reasons.
- Commit: team names one change, constants, metrics, and a stop condition before clicking.
- Run: operator enters the agreed values and preserves the complete result.
- Check: analyst verifies comparability and calculates at least one difference.
- Challenge: reviewer raises a tradeoff, affected stakeholder, limitation, or alternative explanation.
- Decide and rotate: team records adopt, revise, reject, or retest; students move to the next role.
Adapt the roles to group size
- Pairs: one student operates and records evidence while the other facilitates and reviews; swap at every run.
- Three students: combine facilitator and stakeholder reviewer.
- Five students: add a recorder-reporter who maintains the decision log and prepares the briefing.
- Six or more: form two teams testing competing strategies instead of creating passive observer roles.
- One device: project the simulation; keep the operator role while every other task remains on paper.
Protect equitable participation
- Publish the rotation order and track completed roles.
- Allow written, spoken, pointing, or supported contributions; speed and volume are not evidence of insight.
- Provide terminology, result tables, and role cards in advance when helpful.
- Never assign technical operation permanently by perceived ability, language fluency, gender, disability, or prior experience.
- Let a student request a private role adjustment without requiring personal disclosure to peers.
Assess collaboration with evidence, not impressions
Team output can show what the group produced, but it cannot establish what each student understands. Combine the shared decision record with one small individual artifact: a two-minute explanation, exit ticket, annotated metric, limitation statement, or proposed next test.
Useful evidence

Avoid
- grading everyone from the team's profit alone
- anonymous ratings with no factual example
- rewarding dominance, fast clicking, or polished speaking
- forcing peers to disclose conflict publicly
- treating equal task time as identical support needs
Use a simple disagreement and escalation rule
When students disagree, each option must be stated with predicted metrics and a reason. The team may run both options if time permits, use a teacher-announced tie-break rule, or record the minority view. A student may call a stop for fabricated evidence, undisclosed input changes, unsafe or discriminatory reasoning, personal-data use, or a legal/ethical concern.
Move personal conflict, exclusion, harassment, accessibility barriers, or sensitive disclosures out of peer negotiation and into the school's normal teacher support and safeguarding process. The simulator is a learning model, not authority for real employment, safety, legal, financial, or high-impact decisions.

What roles should a business simulation team have?
Use facilitator, simulation operator, evidence analyst, and stakeholder reviewer. Roles divide responsibility, but every student should understand the evidence and recommendation.
How often should students rotate business simulation roles?
Rotate after each complete decision cycle or at least once per class. Announce the sequence first so operation and analysis do not remain with the same students.
How do these team roles work with groups of three or five?
For three, combine facilitator and reviewer. For five, add a recorder-reporter. With larger groups, two small teams testing different strategies usually creates better participation.
How should individual contribution be assessed in a group simulation?
Use role artifacts, brief individual explanations, rotation records, and a factual self-check. Do not use the final team score or unsupported popularity ratings as the only evidence.
Can business simulation team roles work with one classroom device?
Yes. Project the simulation, assign one operator, and keep prediction, evidence, stakeholder review, and recommendation work on paper. Rotate operation during the next cycle.
