What belongs in a business simulation decision brief?
A strong brief answers six questions in order: What decision is being made? What baseline and controlled change were compared? Which results changed, by how much, and in what units? What important tradeoff or stakeholder effect appeared? What action does the evidence support? What uncertainty, model limit, or next test keeps the recommendation honest?
Concise does not mean unsupported. Every important claim should point to a labeled result, calculation, observation, or stated constraint. Keep facts, interpretations, and recommendations distinct. Simulation output describes the model run; it does not guarantee what a real organization, customer, worker, or market will do.
Use the D-E-C-I-D-E structure
D — Define the decision
Name the fictional business, the choice, the goal, and any non-negotiable safety, legal, privacy, labor, accessibility, or care constraint.
E — Explain the test
Identify the baseline, the one input intentionally changed, the settings held constant, and whether a repeat run was used.
C — Cite the evidence
Report two to four relevant measures with values, units, direction, and magnitude. Show one calculation when it helps the reader verify the claim.
I — Interpret the tradeoff
Explain what improved, what weakened or stayed uncertain, who may be affected, and why profit alone does not settle the choice.
D — Decide and safeguard
Recommend keep, change, reject, or test again. State a condition, monitoring measure, or guardrail that must accompany the action.
E — Expose the limit
Name what the model omits, avoid causal or universal claims, and propose the next controlled test or real-world evidence that would be needed.
Worked example: café staffing decision
Scenario: A fictional café is considering one higher staffing level during the morning rush. The team runs the coffee shop simulator, changing staffing only and holding price, menu, quality, marketing, and demand conditions constant.
Decision. The café should test the higher morning staffing level for one more comparable period, provided service quality and safe workload remain protected.
Evidence. Compared with the baseline, monthly profit increased from $2,180 to $2,410, a gain of $230 or 10.6%. Average queue time fell from 8.4 to 5.9 minutes, while the customer rating rose from 76 to 81. Labor cost increased by $620.
Tradeoff and interpretation. The test produced both a better customer result and higher simulated profit, but the extra labor cost means the decision depends on maintaining enough demand. The run does not show whether every shift needs the same coverage.
Boundary and next step. Repeat the test under a lower-demand condition and compare profit, queue time, workload, and quality. The simulator is a simplified model, so the result does not prove a real café will earn the same return or replace applicable scheduling and employment requirements.
Why this works: the recommendation is conditional; the comparison changes one factor; the evidence includes magnitude and units; the labor tradeoff is visible; and the conclusion names both a model limit and a useful next test.

Turn the brief into a three-minute presentation

Question routine
Listeners ask one evidence question (“Which result supports that?”), one alternative question (“What else could explain the change?”), and one responsibility question (“Who or what must be protected?”). Presenters may answer, acknowledge that the evidence is missing, or revise the recommendation. A careful “the model cannot show that” is stronger than an invented answer.

Use the business simulation rubric for a scored final product or the peer review protocol before grading. Preserve the first draft and ask students to mark one evidence revision and one reasoning revision. Do not award extra credit merely for high simulated profit, polished slides, speaking speed, or control of the device.
Teams may share run data and visual evidence. Verify individual learning with a short written explanation, one calculation, a conference response, or a reflection. Permit a spoken, written, visual, recorded, or teacher-scribed format when appropriate, while holding the reasoning and evidence expectations constant.
Keep the brief responsible and classroom-safe
- Use fictional or teacher-provided scenarios; do not require students to disclose personal finances, employment, health, family, or other sensitive information.
- Label simulator results as simulated evidence. Do not present them as forecasts, professional advice, legal conclusions, or proof about real people.
- Treat safety, care, licensing, privacy, accessibility, fair labor, and truthful advertising as constraints—not optional costs to remove.
- Document sources, calculators, AI assistance, or other help when the assignment requires it, and verify all numbers and claims before submission.
- Refer real high-impact legal, financial, employment, health, or safety decisions to current authoritative sources and qualified review.

What is a business simulation decision brief?
A decision brief is a concise memo that states a decision, compares a baseline with a controlled test, cites labeled evidence, explains a tradeoff, recommends an action, and limits the conclusion to what the simulation can support.
How long should a student decision brief be?
One page or about 300 to 500 words is enough for most classroom investigations. A short activity can use six labeled sentences, while a longer project can attach calculations, run records, and sources.
Can teams write one brief but receive individual grades?
Yes. Score shared evidence and the team brief once, then verify each student's reasoning with an individual explanation, reflection, calculation check, or response to a question.
Should students recommend the option with the highest simulated profit?
Not automatically. Students should consider service, quality, workload, capacity, cash, risk, stakeholders, and responsible constraints, then explain why the selected tradeoff fits the stated decision.
Can simulation evidence support a real business decision?
No. A classroom simulation is a simplified model for comparison and reasoning. Real decisions require current evidence, applicable rules, stakeholder input, and qualified review where legal, financial, employment, health, or safety issues matter.
