What should a business simulation assessment measure?

Measure whether students can frame a decision, make a fair comparison, cite relevant results, explain a calculation, identify a tradeoff or model limitation, and revise a claim or next action. The simulator outcome is useful evidence, but it is not a complete measure of learning: a high-profit run may be a guess, while an unsuccessful run can support excellent analysis.

Plan assessment before students start. Tell them which evidence is shared by the team, which explanation must be individual, when feedback is formative, and what final criteria will be scored. The free tools below work together, but teachers can select only the pieces that fit the lesson length.

A six-stage assessment workflow

1Publish the target

Use the assignment template to name one decision, required evidence, submission format, responsible boundaries, and scoring criteria. Show a short example of a comparable baseline and changed run before gameplay begins.

2Observe the process

During investigation, use the observation checklist and conference guide. Record a specific action, quote, artifact, or result; then give one next step. Observation should guide learning, not become a surprise personality score.

3Preserve the evidence

Keep labeled run data, calculations, claims, and revisions in the evidence portfolio. Use the reflection journal for each student's prediction, interpretation, limitation, and next test.

4Challenge the draft

Run the peer review protocol before grading. Reviewers check comparability, calculations, claim strength, tradeoffs, and model limits. Authors accept, adapt, or decline feedback with a reason and record what they revise.

5Make thinking public

Use the discussion and debrief guide to compare interpretations without turning the activity into a profit leaderboard. Ask what changed, what the evidence supports, what remains uncertain, and which controlled test should come next.

6Score the revised work

Apply the 16-point analytic rubric after students have had an opportunity to respond. Score decision and test design, numerical evidence, interpretation and tradeoffs, and recommendation and reflection.

Scale the evidence to the available time

15-minute decision sprint

Collect one prediction, one baseline, one changed run, two measures, and a two-sentence exit reflection. Give one formative code; do not attempt to score every criterion from such a small sample.

50-minute investigation

Add a comparable-test check, one calculation, a tradeoff, brief peer challenge, and a revised recommendation. Score the evidence and interpretation or use all four rubric criteria when the final response is complete.

Multi-session project

Use the portfolio for multiple runs, sources or assumptions, conference notes, revision history, and a final recommendation audit. Verify individual reasoning separately from the shared team product.

Keep grades fair, accessible, and evidence-based

Separate team and individual evidence

  • Score shared run records and team artifacts once.
  • Ask each student to explain one input, result, calculation, tradeoff, and revision.
  • Rotate operators and speakers; device control is not proof of understanding.
  • Record “not yet observed” separately from “not demonstrated.”
  • Offer written, spoken, visual, or teacher-scribed explanation where appropriate.

Assess responsibility as part of reasoning

  • Do not reward profit that ignores safety, law, privacy, accessibility, labor, or customer harm.
  • Require claims to stay within what a simplified classroom model can show.
  • Use fictional or teacher-provided information; avoid sensitive personal data.
  • Document calculator, source, AI, or other assistance and verify the final work.
  • Refer high-impact legal, financial, employment, health, or safety decisions to authoritative guidance and qualified review.

Responsible constraints are not optional penalties to remove for a better score. They are part of the business decision. Students can identify what the model omits without being expected to provide professional advice.

Write feedback that causes a useful next action

Use an observation, its consequence, and one attainable next step. For example: “The comparison changes price and staffing, so it cannot isolate the staffing effect. Keep price constant and repeat the run.” Or: “Your profit claim is supported, but wait time and quality moved in opposite directions. Add that tradeoff before making the recommendation.”

Avoid vague praise, labels about ability, or instructions to maximize a dashboard score. A compact feedback cycle is enough: notice evidence → ask a question → agree on one revision → revisit the artifact. Preserve the original and revised thinking so growth is visible.
