How do you align a business simulation to learning objectives?

Write one observable learning objective before choosing game settings. Identify the decision students will make, the evidence that would demonstrate the objective, the instruction they need before and during play, and the assessment criterion that will evaluate the same thinking. Remove exciting simulator features that do not serve that target.

Name the thinking

Use an observable verb such as calculate, compare, explain, evaluate, justify, or revise. Avoid vague targets such as understand business.

Engineer the evidence

Require a baseline, one controlled change, comparable results, a calculation or pattern, and an evidence-bounded conclusion when those items match the objective.

Check the match

A student who meets the objective should be able to earn credit even when the simulated business loses money or the test disproves the original idea.

Worked example: coffee shop staffing and capacity

Course goal: Students analyze how capacity decisions affect cost and customer service. Objective: Given two coffee shop runs with the same price, quality, and promotion, students will calculate changes in customers served, wait time, and profit; explain whether staffing was a binding capacity constraint; and recommend a repeat test with a stop rule.

Simulation task: Students record a baseline month, add one worker without changing other main decisions, and record a second month. They calculate absolute and percentage changes, then explain whether service improvement outweighed added labor cost. A result table and written or recorded explanation are acceptable evidence.

Instruction and checkpoint: Before play, model percentage change and distinguish correlation from a controlled comparison. After the baseline, check that students recorded price, staffing, demand, wait time, customers served, labor cost, and profit. If several settings changed, label the run exploratory and require a cleaner comparison.

Assessment: Score comparison quality, calculation and interpretation, mechanism and tradeoff, and a responsible next action. Do not score the highest-profit team more highly simply for winning. A conclusion that the added worker is not justified can fully meet the objective when evidence supports it.

Boundaries: Students may not recommend unpaid labor, discriminatory scheduling, unsafe workload, deceptive promotions, or collection of personal customer data. The simulator simplifies real operations; actual employment, accessibility, food-safety, tax, licensing, and advertising requirements depend on jurisdiction and context.
