Prepare a fair observation round

Choose one focus

Observe decision framing, comparable testing, evidence interpretation, calculation, collaboration, or responsible constraints. A narrow focus produces more reliable notes than trying to score everything at once.

Make evidence visible

Ask every team to keep a baseline, changed input, two to four result measures, and next action on paper or in the evidence portfolio. Do not rely on memory or unlabeled screenshots.

Plan the route

Rotate which team is visited first. Spend the same short window at each table. Record “not yet observed” when evidence is unavailable; do not convert missing observation into a zero.

Pair the code with a brief artifact or quote: “T—changed price and staffing together, so the cause is unclear” or “B—team paused the marketing claim until evidence and disclosure were checked.” Codes describe current evidence; they are not permanent labels for students.

Run a three-to-five-minute evidence conference

  1. Ask for the decision: “What single decision are you testing, and what did you predict?”
  2. Ask for the comparison: “Show me the baseline and changed run. What stayed constant?”
  3. Probe one number: “Which measure matters most here? Explain its unit or one calculation.”
  4. Invite a boundary: “Who or what is affected that this dashboard may not fully show?”
  5. Return ownership: “Based on that evidence, what will you test, verify, or rewrite next?”

Use neutral follow-ups: “What makes you say that?”, “Where is that recorded?”, “What else changed?”, and “What evidence would change your mind?” Avoid telling the team which setting will maximize results. The purpose is to reveal thinking and improve the next test.

Fast version: ask for decision, evidence, and next action in 90 seconds. Deeper version: spend eight minutes spot-checking a calculation and a responsible constraint. Mark a later revisit when the artifact is incomplete.

Keep observation equitable and low-stakes

Separate opportunity from performance

  • Do not reward speed, loudness, device control, or prior game familiarity.
  • Offer spoken, written, visual, and teacher-scribed ways to explain reasoning.
  • Ask a different student at each visit; announce that roles and speakers will rotate.
  • Record “not observed” separately from “evidence not yet demonstrated.”

Protect privacy and responsible boundaries

  • Use first names, initials, or team labels; do not record unnecessary personal information.
  • Do not ask students to disclose family finances, employment, immigration, health, or other sensitive circumstances.
  • Do not treat a simulation result as legal, financial, safety, hiring, lending, or investment advice.
  • Pause high-impact claims for authoritative sources or qualified review.

The simulator is a simplified model. Strong performance means testing and explaining responsibly, not discovering a guaranteed real-world strategy. If AI, calculators, or other assistance are used, students should keep inputs, verify outputs, and remain accountable for the final reasoning.

Turn notes into useful follow-up

After the sweep, sort notes into one whole-class misconception, a few targeted conferences, and evidence ready for acknowledgement. Give feedback as an observation plus a next action: “Your comparison changed price and staffing; rerun one change before claiming which caused the result.” Avoid averaging every code into a grade.

Students can document the response in the reflection journal, preserve the before-and-after evidence in the portfolio, and use the peer review protocol before final submission. Apply the rubric after a reasonable opportunity to revise.

One-device or no-device option: observe the operator explaining each setting before entry, an analyst checking paper results, a recorder labeling runs, and a responsibility lead naming constraints.
