Business simulation worked examples and answer key

Verify the math, then assess the meaning. These examples show formulas, substitutions, units, interpretations, and common errors for the calculations students use across xdage business simulations.

What belongs in a business simulation answer key?

A useful answer key separates what can be checked exactly from what must be judged with evidence. Formulas, arithmetic, units, and the direction of a change can be verified. A recommendation may have several defensible answers because students can value profit, service, quality, workload, capacity, cash, or risk differently.

For every response, look for five parts: the correct method, visible substitution, a labeled result, an interpretation tied to the scenario, and a boundary on the conclusion. Never grade simulated profit alone. A failed experiment with accurate analysis can demonstrate stronger learning than a lucky high-profit run.

Eight worked business simulation examples

1. Revenue

A café serves 180 orders at an average order value of $8.40.

Revenue = quantity × average price

Worked answer: 180 orders × $8.40/order = $1,512 revenue.

Interpretation: This is sales before costs. It is not profit. A response that calls $1,512 “earnings” without subtracting costs needs correction.

2. Total variable cost

A food truck sells 240 meals. Ingredients and packaging cost $3.25 per meal.

Variable cost = quantity × variable cost per unit

Worked answer: 240 meals × $3.25/meal = $780 variable cost.

Interpretation: This cost changes with volume. Permit fees or a fixed daily rental should be recorded separately unless the scenario says otherwise.

3. Operating profit

A bookstore records $4,600 revenue, $2,150 inventory cost, $900 labor, and $650 other operating costs.

Profit = revenue − total operating costs

Worked answer: $4,600 − ($2,150 + $900 + $650) = $900 operating profit.

Check: Costs total $3,700. Parentheses prevent the common error of subtracting only the first cost.

4. Profit margin

Use the bookstore result: $900 operating profit on $4,600 revenue.

Profit margin = profit ÷ revenue × 100

Worked answer: $900 ÷ $4,600 × 100 = 19.565…%, or 19.6%.

Interpretation: About 19.6 cents of each revenue dollar remains as operating profit in this simplified scenario. Margin is not markup and should not be divided by cost.

5. Break-even units

A bakery has $1,260 in fixed costs. Each item sells for $6.50 and has $2.30 in variable cost.

Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price − variable cost per unit)

Worked answer: $1,260 ÷ ($6.50 − $2.30) = 300, so 300 items.

Check: Contribution is $4.20 per item. If the result were 300.2, round up to 301 whole items because a fraction of a sale cannot fully cover the costs.

6. Percent change

A car wash reduces average wait time from 12 minutes to 9 minutes.

Percent change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100

Worked answer: (9 − 12) ÷ 12 × 100 = −25%, a 25% decrease.

Interpretation: The absolute change is −3 minutes; the relative change is −25%. Do not call this a three-percentage-point change because the original measure is time, not a percentage.

7. Capacity utilization

A salon can complete 64 appointments in a period and actually completes 48.

Utilization = actual output ÷ practical capacity × 100

Worked answer: 48 ÷ 64 × 100 = 75% utilization.

Interpretation: One quarter of stated practical capacity was unused. That does not prove staffing should be cut: demand timing, breaks, service mix, and safe workload may explain the gap.

8. Evidence-bounded recommendation

A restaurant raises staffing by one level. Profit rises from $1,050 to $1,180, average wait falls from 14 to 10 minutes, and quality stays at 82.

Model answer: “In this controlled comparison, added staffing coincided with $130 more profit and a four-minute shorter wait while reported quality stayed constant. Keep the change for one repeat run, but do not claim staffing always causes higher profit because demand and simulation variation may affect the result.”

Why it works: It states direction and magnitude, checks a tradeoff metric, limits causality, and proposes verification.

Diagnose the first incorrect step rather than marking only the final number. Accept equivalent methods when assumptions are stated and the logic is valid. For group work, a shared calculation may receive team feedback, but ask each student to explain one formula or interpretation individually before assigning an individual score.

Do business simulations have one correct answer?

Usually no. A calculation can have a verifiable result, but a strategy claim depends on the scenario, controlled comparison, evidence, tradeoffs, and model limits.

How should teachers grade a correct calculation with weak reasoning?

Give credit for the accurate method and result, then score interpretation separately. Students should explain what the number means, what it does not prove, and which evidence supports the next decision.

Should students round during a business calculation?

Keep unrounded values through intermediate steps and round the final result to a sensible precision. State the rounding rule, unit, and whether a percentage is a percentage-point or relative change.

Can students use a calculator for these examples?
