How do you teach business decision-making with a simulation?

Give teams one decision with two or three plausible options. Before playing, they identify the objective, non-negotiable constraints, affected stakeholders, decision criteria, and what evidence would change their minds. They rate each option in a weighted matrix and record the reason behind every rating.

Students then predict a reasonable outcome range, change one influential assumption to test sensitivity, and run one controlled comparison. Their final recommendation must state what the simulation supports, what remains uncertain, and which guardrails a real decision would need. The aim is traceable judgment—not finding a supposedly perfect answer.

Do not use a criterion only because the simulator displays it. Include at least one stakeholder, quality, safety, fairness, or resilience criterion so the decision is not reduced to short-term profit.

50-minute lesson plan

1. Frame the decision — 6 minutes

Choose one scenario. Write a neutral decision question, the objective, the time horizon, two or three feasible options, and two non-negotiable constraints. Name at least two affected stakeholder groups.

2. Build the matrix — 10 minutes

Select four criteria. Give each a weight from 1 (useful) to 3 (critical), totaling any amount. Rate each option from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong), cite a reason, multiply rating by weight, and total the scores.

3. Audit assumptions — 7 minutes

Circle the two ratings based on the weakest evidence. For each, record the assumption, a low–expected–high outcome range, the warning sign that it is wrong, and evidence that would reduce uncertainty.

4. Check sensitivity — 5 minutes

Change the most debatable weight by one point or reduce a weak rating by one point. Recalculate. If the leading option changes, mark the recommendation as conditional and explain the decision threshold.

5. Run a controlled test — 12 minutes

Record a baseline, then change only the decision variable that distinguishes the leading option. Keep other controllable settings fixed. Capture one primary measure, two guardrails, and an unexpected observation.

6. Decide and challenge — 10 minutes

Write the evidence brief below. A partner acts as a constructive challenger: identify one missing stakeholder, one hidden trade-off, or one plausible alternative explanation. Revise the recommendation or explain why it stands.

Teacher notes and adaptations

Keep criteria distinct

“Profit” and “revenue” may double-count similar benefits. Ask what each criterion uniquely protects. Do not allow a high total to override a non-negotiable safety, legality, fairness, privacy, or cash constraint.

Support new learners

Provide two options and four prewritten criteria with equal weights. Students supply ratings, reasons, one uncertainty, the controlled test, and the conclusion. Calculators are optional.

Extend the analysis

Have groups use different stakeholder weights, compare rankings, calculate percentage change, repeat trials, or create a decision tree with a best-case, expected, and worst-case branch.

Keep decisions safe, lawful, and model-bounded

A weighted matrix organizes stated preferences; it does not make a decision objective. Ratings and weights can encode missing evidence, bias, power differences, or double-counting. The simulation also omits many real customers, workers, competitors, contracts, regulations, accessibility needs, safety duties, and long-term effects.

Do not collect student personal information or present simulated performance as a forecast. A real decision requires current primary evidence, meaningful input from affected people, documented authority, privacy and accessibility safeguards, legal and safety review, truthful communication, financial controls, and monitoring. Do simulation results predict real decisions?
